With blog platforms Movable Type and WordPress adding social-networking features to their software, it was only a matter of time before Google's Blogger did the same.

A post on the official Blogger blog earlier this week announced that users would soon be able to display their "followers"--other Blogger members who have subscribed to them.
The optional feature--along with a notification on blog owners' "dashboards" of how many people have subscribed to their blogs through Blogger--will be rolled out in the next few weeks. A new tab on the dashboard, called "Blogs I'm Following," lets Blogger users keep track of updates to the blogs on their subscription list.

The problem with these sorts of features is that they're inherently limited to readers whose "following" is directly tied to the Blogger software and its members, so it will reflect only a slice of readers. A follower widget (or gadget, as Google calls them) claiming 21 followers only refers to Blogger members, not to the overall number of people reading the blog, which could make the owners of smaller blogs get a bit image-conscious.

The piece presently under review represents the garnering and refinement of over a decade of collaborative research hitherto published in the top journals in both strategy and international business, and that is pitched squarely at the practicing manager. Based on the study of more than one hundred and fifty "strategic moves" (managerial decisions and actions delivering products/services that opened and captured new, untapped/uncontested market space or "blue oceans") in more than thirty wide-ranging industries, the authors argue that extant work on business strategy is misguidedly focused on "red oceans" or the savage, zero-sum competition for share in known and shrinking market space. In accounting for the roots of competitive advantage, they argue that it is the aforementioned strategic moves, rather than company or industry characteristics, that are the crucial analytical units. In this context, firms' strategic focus should shift from competitors to "alternatives" (goods/services with the same purpose but with different functions and forms), and from customers to "noncustomers" of the industry in which it resides. Utilizing their example of Cirque du Soleil to illustrate this point, the latter achieved rapid growth in a short time by breaking down market boundaries by focusing their creative attention on alternative market offerings to circuses (e.g. theater), but also by focusing on noncustomers (e.g. adult theater customers).

Their central thesis, then, is that successful firms like Cirque du Soleil or casella Wine's [yellow tail] are 'Value innovators" who look beyond the traditional Porterian structural/environmental determinism and make the competition irrelevant by creating a leap in value for customers and the company alike with "market-creating business offerings"; by successfully pursuing differentiation and low cost simultaneously, breaking the traditional value-cost tradeoff. They achieve this by radically reconstructing buyer value attributes, asking four fundamental questions; the first, 'Which of the attributes that the industry takes for granted should be eliminated?' and the second, 'Which should be reduced well below the industry's standard?' allow an insight into how firms might reduce cost. Further, 'Which attributes should be raised well above the industry's standard?' and 'Which should be created that the industry has never offered?' allow firms to lift customer value and grow new demand. To utilize an example from one of then* earlier works, that of Southwest Airlines, the latter created untapped market space in the guise of short-haul air travel by eliminating meals, in-flight films, designated seats, multiple seating classes from first to economy, membership in an airline reservation system, central airports, and hub-and-spoke route system, radically reducing their costs. Simultaneously, they created the concept of frequent point-to-point flights, with fares often 60 percent below competitors', plastic reusable boarding passes, airports in small cities or smaller, less-congested airports in larger cities and 15-minute gate turnarounds (against 35 minutes for the average carrier). By focusing on the key discriminating factors leading consumers to fly or else drive their cars, and eliminating or reducing everything else, Southwest inserted itself creatively between airlines and surface transport, thereby creating a new and highly profitable "Blue Ocean" market segment.

Nike Granted Waivers To Run Ads Starring Beijing Olympics Athletes

Nike has secured waivers from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to run ads featuring Olympic athletes during the duration of the Beijing Games.

Tim Crow, ceo of Synergy comments: ‘Nike is a special case, but it sets a very dangerous precedent. People from other categories will say, "If Nike can get a waiver then why can't we get one?' It's a very dangerous precedent".

According to a spokesman from Nike, the IOC regulations will be stricter surrounding the London Olympics in 2012. The spokesman said that the rules had been similar in Athens four years ago, but not at the Sydney Games in 2000.

The first ad, launched today, is a viral campaign starring Beijing 2008 medal hopeful, Kelly Sotherton. Nike will also run ads featuring marathon runner Paula Radcliffe as well as other as yet undisclosed key athletes.

The Sotherton ad shows the heptalthete undergoing a polygraph test and stating categorically that she ‘will win gold in Beijing'. Sotherton is interviewed on camera by psycho-physiologist Dr Hilary Witchel answering a series of questions, including ‘out of the seven events is javelin your weakest?' and ‘do you ever hope one of your opponents chokes?'

A Hard Lesson

First, the bad news: 36% of parents want advertising to children banned. The good news: 28% say advertising is a necessary evil (yes, evil)

Ah youth, replete with memories including—to the chagrin of many parents—at least one or two oft-recited ad jingles. After all, who can forget Oscar Mayer’s ode to the wiener. Or McDonald’s short-lived but unforgettable tongue twister: “two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese...” well, you remember.

Not much has changed over the decades. But today, parents’ fear of the effect of advertising on puerile minds is backed by some pretty damning evidence, especially when it comes to food.

Canada has one of the highest rates of childhood obesity in the world, and this spring, a network of concerned organizations (including the Canadian Cancer Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation) calling itself The Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance of Canada (CDPAC), hosted a conference of scientific and legal experts on the impact of marketing on young waistlines.

It supported the pundits’ findings that media is at least partly to blame for the obesity epidemic. And, at the end of April, in a united front, the CDPAC called on Health Canada to define what constitutes “unhealthy food and beverages” and to create regulations that ban all marketing of those products to children within two years.

Within this climate, Marketing and Today’s Parent conducted an online survey of almost 3,000 Canadian parents to find out how they really feel about the advertising their kids are exposed to. Not surprisingly, two-thirds are “very concerned” about the level of marketing targeted at children, 40% think most advertising is misleading and aimed at getting people to buy things they don’t need, and 31% feel that ads influence a child’s self-esteem. Half would prefer no advertising aimed at kids under 10.

Some of these findings do not bode well for marketers and suggest parents are either not aware of, or are not buying into, the food industry’s much-ballyhooed shift toward healthier products and lifestyle messaging. Fifty per cent of parents said advertising promotes unhealthy products or habits versus only 11% who think it promotes a healthy lifestyle.

The survey also found that more than one-third (36%) of parents would like to see advertising to kids banned outright, and if not banned, then limitations placed on what products are advertised.

I haven't been online these past few days because I've been sick. My regular blogging habit everyday is from 1:00AM (dawn) until 7:00AM (morning) with only 3 to 4 hours of nap. Those critics complained that the company had overbuilt in the United States particularly in major urban areas like Manhattan, where it is not unusual to see several Starbucks in a single city block.

The Seattle-based company was also an aggressive builder in California and Florida. Those states experienced red-hot growth during the housing boom and have been hardest hit by the U.S. housing downturn.

Oppenheimer & Co analyst Matt DiFrisco said he was "very encouraged" by the company's announcement.

"It helps remove some of the cannibalization that the company brought on itself," said DiFrisco, who also has an "outperform" rating on Starbucks shares. The number of unemployed in us today will increase, and the stock price of Starbucks increased but analytics say that this action will further worsen the U.S. economy and steep increases in gas and food prices would put additional pressure on the company known for its premium-priced coffee drinks, such as $3 to $4 lattes.

Dunkin’ Donuts Pulls Ad After Right-Wing Complaints

Dunkin’ Donuts has pulled an online advertisement featuring Rachael Ray after complaints that a fringed black-and-white scarf worn by the celebrity chef in the ad offers symbolic support for Muslim extremism and terrorism.

The coffee and baked goods chain said the ad, which began appearing online May 7, was pulled last weekend because “the possibility of misperception detracted from its original intention to promote our iced coffee.”

In the spot, Ray holds an iced coffee while standing in front of trees with pink blossoms.

Critics, including conservative commentator Michelle Malkin, complained that the scarf wrapped around her looked like a kaffiyeh, the traditional Arab headdress. Critics who fuelled online complaints about the ad in blogs say such scarves have come to symbolize Muslim extremism and terrorism.

The kaffiyeh, Malkin wrote in an online column posted last Friday, “has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad. Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant (and not-so-ignorant) fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons.”

A statement issued by Canton, Mass.-based Dunkin’ Brands Inc., however, said the scarf had a paisley design, and was selected by a stylist for the advertising shoot. “Absolutely no symbolism was intended,” the company said.

Now we see interesting news again on that topic … reported by the University of New South Wales… who tell us that true colors are in your brain. This is a key area of research for those who see colors inaccurately. Not surprisingly… this research finding by a University of New South Wales PhD student, Ms Mei Ying Boon, recently earned her a nomination in this year's Fresh Science Awards.

"And I think what we are seeing is an extraordinary expression of the fact that 'We the people' is beginning to mean to all of us."

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Democratic presidential nomination his, Barack Obama reached out Wednesday to mend fences with his defeated rival as Republican opponent John McCain tried to frame the fall campaign on his own terms. "I think he has exercised very bad judgment on national security issues and others," McCain said.

Hillary Rodham Clinton was angling to become Obama's running mate and her aides ramped up the speculation on that matter Wednesday. "I think a lot of her supporters would like to see her on the ticket," Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe said. But Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs cautioned "there is no deal in the works."

Clinton has yet to acknowledge Obama's victory in the bruising Democratic race and her aides — also dodging that conclusion — said on the morning talk shows that she would take a few days to decide what comes next for her. Obama spoke by phone with her Tuesday night and both sides predicted he and Clinton would sit down together before long.

"When the dust settles and it makes sense for her, he'll meet whenever she wants to," Gibbs said. "She's accumulated a lot of votes throughout this country. We want to make sure that we're appealing to her voters."

On the final night of the primary season, Clinton won South Dakota on Tuesday while Obama took Montana — and a slew of party superdelegates who declared their support to help him clinch the nomination. He did it, according to The Associated Press tally, based on primary elections, state Democratic caucuses and support from superdelegates. It took 2,118 delegates to clinch the nomination at the convention in Denver this summer, and Obama had 2,154 by the AP count.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, who ran twice for the Democratic nomination in the 1980s and made what was then historic progress for a black candidate, praised Obama's achievement in a phone interview from Serengeti National Park in northeastern Tanzania, where he is attending a meeting.

"Obama's nomination reflects phenomenal growth in America," he told The Associated Press. "The dream of a promised land is being fulfilled."

He said Clinton "should accept the defeat graciously" and the two longtime rivals should strive for a quick reconciliation so that the party is united in the fall.

Four Democratic leaders, also eager for unity, said in a joint statement Wednesday that "the voters have spoken" and the remaining uncommitted superdelegates should declare their support for a candidate by Friday. They were Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Democratic chairman Howard Dean and West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin, head of the Democratic Governors Association.

Former Vice President Walter Mondale, a superdelegate who had been a Clinton support and the 1984 Democratic presidential nominee, endorsed Obama on Wednesday.

The primaries behind them, Obama and McCain were drawing the battle line for a fall fight that will make history with the election of either the oldest first-term president in McCain or the first black commander in chief in Obama. In speeches marking the start of the general election, both maneuvered for the advantage with voters sour on the status quo. Both were competing beyond their party's base, too.

"The key to winning the election is independent voters and Democrats as well," McCain said in an interview shown Wednesday on ABC's "Good Morning America." Even so, he said "I don't think so" when asked on CBS whether he'd pick a Democrat as his running mate.

Obama's racial groundbreaking was noted everywhere from the White House to the house of his Kenyan relatives from his father's side of the family.

"I've just watched him on television, and as a family we are very happy," his uncle, Said Obama, told AP from Kisumu in western Kenya. "Really, it is something that is a trendsetter."

White House press secretary Dana Perino said on behalf of President Bush: "Senator Obama came a long way in becoming his party's nominee. And his historic achievement reflects the fact that our country has come along way, too."

In St. Paul, Minn., Obama, 46, ceded no ground on the reformer mantle and cast McCain as a continuation of the unpopular Bush's eight-year tenure.

"My differences with him are not personal; they are with the policies he has proposed in this campaign," he said Tuesday. "Because while John McCain can legitimately tout moments of independence from his party in the past, such independence has not been the hallmark of his presidential campaign."

The campaign is the first in half a century in which neither a sitting president nor a vice president is running for the highest office, and the first since 1960 in which a senator will assume the White House. A fragile economy and an ongoing Iraq war, as well as matters of age and race, serve as a backdrop.

KFC to put ‘vegan chicken’ on the menu

Following a five-year roasting by animal-rights activists, KFC Canada is promising improved welfare for the chickens it buys for its fast-food outlets in exchange for an end to a boycott campaign that will continue in the U.S. and elsewhere.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has agreed to call off its Canadian “Kentucky Fried Cruelty” campaign, which featured high-profile actress Pamela Anderson among others, following a signed agreement with the company.

Among other things, the deal obliges KFC Canada to buy from suppliers who use gas to kill their chickens painlessly, considered to be the least cruel method of slaughter.

The company is also promising to insist on other “animal-welfare friendly” measures relating to how the birds are kept, including a maximum on crowding and phasing out non-essential growth hormones and other drugs.

Customers of the popular restaurant chain will also be able to order a vegan “chicken” item, according to the deal that followed almost seven months of negotiations.

“It’s going to drastically reduce the suffering of chickens in slaughterhouses and also... improve the living conditions for animals while they’re on the farm,” Matt Prescott, PETA’s assistant director of corporate affairs, said from Norfolk, Va.

KFC Canada president Steve Langford said he was delighted with the agreement.

“It will be nice to put this behind us,” Langford said. “Our preference is to have nothing negative attached to our brand.”

Langford said the Canadian operations, which are independent of those in the U.S., chose to take the situation into its own hands and talk to PETA about animal welfare.

“Once I got involved and we actually met face to face, we found out that we had no differences of opinion about how animals should be treated,” Langford said.

PETA’s campaign included more than 12,000 protests at KFC restaurants and outside the homes of company senior executives.

KFC Canada is owned by Priszm Income Fund, based in Vaughan, Ont., which operates 465 outlets across the country. The fund has been struggling to stem a flow of red ink and shore up falling share values.

Most of the 300 independent franchisees have agreed to abide by the agreement with PETA.

While the anti-KFC campaign will now end in this country, PETA said it would continue in the U.S., the U.K. and other countries. However, it is hoping to persuade Yum Brands, which owns KFC outlets in the United States, to follow the Canadian lead.

Practice Makes Perfect Networking

These are the two things you should know about networking:

1. "Practice makes perfect" is not enough.
Practice alone is not enough. It must be "effective" practice. In martial arts, the sensei (master) says, "Perfect practice makes perfect." In other words, if you're just going through the motions, you are not learning and growing. Every time you do a kata (a system of basic body positioning and movement exercises in karate), you must do it as though you were in a tournament, or as though the sensei were there watching you. Only with that intensity of focus does one improve.

The same applies to your networking efforts. If you are applying the techniques halfheartedly, you'll get less-than-acceptable results.

Practicing the skills necessary to become a good networker is important. But would-be networkers cannot expect to become master networkers by just going through the motions. Take, for instance, the 60-second presentation or brief commercial you make every week when you attend many types of networking groups or various other organizations. Most people come to the meeting unprepared and unrehearsed, with only a vague idea of what they will talk about. While others give their presentations, instead of listening, they're thinking about how to say what they need to say. When their turn comes, they stumble through an amateurish, marginal presentation. Yes, they practiced, but it was far from perfect practice, and the results prove it.

If you're a teacher, do you wing your lesson plan? The better teachers set goals and objectives for what they want their students to learn. They spend time planning exactly what they are going to cover in class, sometimes down to the exact wording, and they prepare visual aids and handouts that reinforce the subject matter and facilitate learning.

As a businessperson, you should have similar goals and objectives. Ask yourself what, exactly, do you want your listeners to learn about your business that they can pass along to prospects for a possible referral. If you're vague and unprepared, your potential referral partners are going to leave the meeting without a clear idea of how to refer you.

You also need to practice delivering your message. Winging it is not going to get you what you want. You have to practice it perfectly if your goal is perfection.

2. Good networkers should talk about more than just business.
A referral relationship is much more than just, "I do business, you do business, let's do business." A better approach is to find common ground on a personal level, then relate your business to it.

The longer I've been involved in networking, the more I've seen the power of personal interests in making connections. Networking is about building personal relationships. If you remove the personal from the equation, you limit the amount of business that can happen. In one networking group I worked with, I introduced an exercise I call the GAINS Exchange, in which people share personal and professional information about themselves (including their Goals, Accomplishments, Interests, Networks, and Skills).

Two of the participants in this group had known each other for more than a year but had never done business. During the exercise, they discovered they both coached their sons' soccer teams. They quickly became close friends and were soon helping each other conduct soccer practices. After a few months, they began referring business to each other--two guys who had barely spoken to each other the first year because they seemed to have so little in common were now doing business because of a personal connection.

Here's another example of the power of common interests. One of BNI's most instinctive, natural networkers and an avid sailboater, whom we shall call "Bob," found himself sitting in an airport shuttle, very casually dressed, next to a man wearing a shirt with a Nautica label. "Do you sail?" he asked. "Yeah, a little bit," said the man. "Why?"

Bob started talking about his own sailing experiences. It turned out he had won a national championship sailing in the harbor where this man lived. They got into a lively conversation about sailing, the man's hometown, and other common interests and experiences.

After a half hour or so, the man asked, "So, are you a professional sailor?" Bob said, "No, I'm in the training business, but it's a lot like sailing, and here's why." They talked a bit about that, with Bob using sailing as a metaphor for much of what he did. The man expressed an interest in hearing more about it on a professional level. At the airport, the two men exchanged cards and went their separate ways.

If Bob had started the conversation by saying, "I'm a professional trainer," that probably would have been the end of it. Instead, by finding a common interest and starting with that, Bob made a connection that had a good chance of turning into business.

Perfect practice makes perfect, and personal connections lead to business. Entrepreneurs who implement these two strategies into their networking efforts get a lot more business than their competition.

Social media consumption challenges traditional media

Social media - and blogs in particular - is becoming a more important part of global media consumption for internet users than some traditional media channels according to the latest survey from media agency Universal McCann.

The global survey notes that in South Korea - "the market that's leading the world in digital trends" - 77% of internet users read blogs each week compared to just 58% reading the mainstream press.
Globally 73% of internet users are reading blogs with 48% including these consumer-generated content in their weekly media diet. According to the survey, TV too is facing similar competition for eyeballs with 83% of internet users having watched a video clip and 59% viewing at least one clip every week.
It adds that there is no sign of a pause in the explosive growth of social media. Video clips, blogs, podcasts, social networks and RSS are all essential components of the online media diet.
While not all markets are as developed, in each of the 29 countries surveyed social media is becoming a key constituent of global media consumption.
This is the third time that the agency's Social Media Tracker has tested uptake of these new digital tools in markets as diverse as the USA, Brazil and Pakistan. With 17,000 respondents it is the world's most detailed survey of the Social Media revolution.

Key findings from Wave 3 include:

* 83% watch video clips, up from 62% in the last study in June
2007
* 78% read blogs, up from 66%
* 57% of internet users are now members of a social network
* RSS consumption is growing rapidly up from 15% to 39%
* Podcasts are now mainstream digital content, listened to by 48%

"Social media is a mass medium for many internet users. Brands and marketers need to adjust rapidly to this revolution in way consumers are creating and digesting content. With every wave of research our Social Media Tracker is noting greater and greater growth for channels such as blogging, video clips and social networks," says Tom Smith, EMEA research manager at Universal McCann.

Other findings of note

A key driver for the growth of social media has been the rise of Social Networks. Members of social networks such as MySpace and Facebook are using these platforms for more of their online experience.

It is an essential document for both large corporate marketing departments and for startup companies. Essentially the Marketing Plan:

* sets future goals and provides direction for future marketing efforts that everyone within the organization should understand and support.

The Marketing Plan is generally undertaken for one of the following reasons:

1. Needed as part of the yearly planning process within the marketing functional area.
2. Needed for a specialized strategy to introduce something new, such as new product planning, entering new markets, or trying a new strategy to fix an existing problem.
3. Is a component within an overall business plan, such as a new business proposal to the financial community.

Subaru’s sexy sumos

Subaru is showing its sexy side with the help of some suds and a few sumo wrestlers in a national multi-platform campaign for its redesigned 2009 Subaru Forester.

The campaign strategy is to showcase Subaru’s Japanese heritage and highlight the Forester’s new styling, said Andrew Simon, senior vice-president, creative director, DDB Toronto, which developed the campaign.

The campaign includes TV, print, online, radio, direct marketing and in-store point-of-sale.

“Each piece does a different job, but overall people hopefully are going to walk away with the message that ‘Wow this really has everything that I love about Japanese engineering,’ ” he said.

A 60-second TV spot entitled, “Car Wash” opens with the new Subaru Forester driving into a car wash to the song “Fire in a Disco,” by Electric Six. In slow motion, a group of sumo wrestlers walk into frame with a hose and buckets of water. They start washing the car, but soon end up in a water fight. “Japanese SUV’s just got a little sexier,” says a voiceover. “Introducing the totally redesigned 2009 Subaru Forester.”

The direct mail piece, developed by Rapp Collins, mimics a package sent by a book publishing company. Inside, consumers find a letter from the publisher along with a copy of The Joy of Sexier—An intimate user’s guide to the 2009 Subaru Forester. The book features hand-drawn illustrations of the 2009 Forester, tips on how to make every drive a sensual experience, and a personalized bookmark.

Consumers can also learn about the Forester at SexySubaru.ca, produced by Fuel in collaboration with Tribal DDB. They can also “photograph” a sexy sumo model as he demonstrates the vehicle’s attributes. The photos can be retouched on the site and submitted for a chance to win a Canon EOS Rebel, MacBook Air and a digital photography suite.

A banner ad presents users with a peephole and a flickering “Sexy” neon sign. When consumers roll over the peephole, the cover swings open and zooms in to reveal the new Subaru Forester. The copy reads: “What were you expecting? Introducing the completely redesigned 2009 Subaru Forester. Japanese SUV’s just got a little sexier. See it for yourself at SexySubaru.ca.”

Another appears to be covered in steam and moisture and users are encouraged to wipe the fog away to reveal a sumo wrestler posing with the Forester at a car wash.

“DDB had the ingenious idea to use sumo wrestlers to emphasis Japanese, and to showcase the Forester’s strength and aggressive new styling features that make the Forester a true SUV,” said Ted Lalka, vice-president, product planning and marketing, in a release. Radio spots should launch soon, and the campaign runs until the end of September. OMD handled the media buy.

Too few stories?

It is possible that your filtering level is set too high and the blog that you have subscribed to may not have any posts that meet the chosen level of filtering.

Some sites that don’t generate a lot of traffic, comments, or activities may not have highly differentiated PostRank scores – for example, almost all posts may be scored as 1.0. If you have then subscribed to only the best posts, our algorithms will have no way to differentiate these posts and very few stories will be delivered to your “My Feeds” section or feed reader.

To fix this, simply click on the blog link in your “My Feeds” section, or navigate to the blog by typing the URL into our search box. Next, open the section with the desired higher level of filtering and click “Add posts to My Feeds” – old filter will be removed automatically and you will receive less stories from the selected source.

What does the little BlogTrends line mean?

The BlogTrends line shows the performance over time of the author or source. From this small graph it is easy to gauge the consistency and the quality of the posts. The red dot is their best post, the blue dot their lowest, and the yellow dot their current post or article. As another school year closes, many teachers are glad that the months of creating lesson plans, giving lectures and checking papers have ended. The summer vacation is usually a time of resting tired minds, strained voices and weary eyes but, at the same time, preparing for the coming of June and the renewal of both the joys and pains of teaching. To those in that particular state of mind, here are five internet tips that may help you become better prepared.(originally from mentorings.org

1. Google. We all know that search engines help you find the information that you need for subject material. But tech savvy teachers also use the service to catch plagiarizers. Most teachers analyze writing style, choice of words, sentence construction and logical reasoning to determine if a student worked entirely on his own. By simply typing a few words or sentences in the search bar, Google helps provide you with hard evidence particularly for those who just download and print an entire term paper from the internet and pass it off as their own work. This may also help teach students to respect intellectual property and cite their sources.

2. Youtube. In 2006, Time Magazine declared “YOU” as the person of the year. What this meant was that the internet has enabled any ordinary person to participate in providing information and entertainment of interest to the public which used to be the domain of big media organizations. Youtube gave millions of people the opportunity to create personal channels to broadcast and share content. Teachers who struggle with available audio-visual equipment in schools can guide students to find videos relevant to classroom discussions. Students can also be encouraged to upload content themselves. You may probably wonder why so many kids today are suddenly playing the Rubik’s cube which used to be the fad in the 80s. There is a popular instructional video in Youtube that shows you the technique for solving the cube. If Youtube can make an old mind game interesting to the new generation, imagine how it can help gain interest for your subject.

3. Web Logs or Blogs. Simply put, these are websites that allow you to create an online journal that can be viewed and commented on by anyone. It has always been very hard to motivate students to write. The formal theme writing activities seem to have become outdated. Encouraging students to create blogs (For example, www.blogger.com) allows them to express their thoughts and feelings in a way that engages their interests. Blogs are also a great source of information on varied topics. Students can even create photo, video or music blogs depending on the subject matter. This provides great motivational plus points by encouraging students to be critical of their own and their classmates’ work.

4. Message Boards. The word “recitation” is far more effective in keeping students quiet than the word “silence”. Recitation can be supplemented with online interaction through discussion forums (For example, www.forumotion.com). What is great about online discussion forums is that it allows students to create personalized accounts and use these to participate in whatever topic you posted. Teachers can facilitate the discussion and control the content of the forum by setting permissions as to who can read, write and comment within the topic. This is a great way to draw out the classroom shy types and encourage them to speak up online.

5. Social Networks. You have probably heard of Friendster. This is an example of a social network very popular to Filipinos. So popular that the site is not accessible from a lot of company and school computers because it is believed to affect productivity. What many fail to realize is that social networks such as these point the way to the future which leads to increased social interaction and collaboration. Social networks provide the environment that allows the development of knowledge through sharing and collaboration. You can teach basic entrepreneurship to students by letting them develop products to be sold through social networks such as Multiply (www.multiply.com) which a lot of young Filipino technopreneurs have already done.

Bear in mind that these five tricks are free. If students complain about the cost of the internet, remember that a lot of students manage to set aside part of their allowance to play online games. Young minds learn to adapt easily to the internet environment. The question is, “Can you keep up with them or risk being obsolete?”

With so many blogs being created every day, it’s a mystery to many bloggers how to make their blog stand out. There are many types of blogs or purposes for blogs and a certain number of tactics are applicable to just about all of them.Some companies choose to hire a blog consultant, but others like to try things internally. For those “DIY” companies and individuals interested in practical tips for marketing and optimizing a business blog, try out the following list of blog marketing and optimization tips:(From toprankblog.com)

1. Decide on a stand alone domain name www.myblog.com or directory of existing site www.mysite.com/blog. Sub domain is also an option blog.mysite.com. Avoid hosted services that do not allow you to use your own domain name!
2. Obtain and install customizable blog software - WordPress and Moveable Type are my favorites.
3. Customize blog look and feel templates - aka design.
4. Research keywords and develop a glossary - Keyword Discovery, WordTracker, SitePoint, SEOBook Keyword Research.
5. Optimize the blog:
* Template optimization - RSS subscription options, social bookmark links, HTML code, Unique title tags, URLs, Sitemap
* Add helper plugins specific to WordPress or MT
* Create keyword rich categories (reference your keyword glossary)

Asus Opens new office, eyes more sales for eePC

Taiwan computer and components maker Asus has opened a new office in the Philippines as part of efforts to beef up sales for its PC and components product line up.

Asus is currently enjoying a windfall not only from its components business, but also from its laptop product line. The company earlier launched the eePC, an ultra-light, internet-centric mobile unit the proved to be a hit in Asia and other markets. According to Benson Lin, Sales Director, Asus Asia Pacific, the company is enjoying its phenomenal sales for its eePC line, and that demand has overtaken supply.

"We sold over 1.3 million eePC units in the first four months since it was launched. Now, we see an overwhelming demand."

The executive further said Asus is undaunte with the release of the "netbook" a sub-notebook category that microprocessor giant Intel has pushed. The company said eePC is considered a netbook. Lin said the demand is always there even if others are set to release their own machines with the same specifications as the eePC. He also said in fact, the next-generation of eePCs will have an Atom processor, the chip that Intel designed and launched particularly for the netbook category.

How to Define A Business Emergency Strategy Before It Is Too Late

We all remember how New Orleans, LA looked after it was ravaged by hurricane Katrina. How can anyone forget? The sites of homes flooded up to the rooftops, people sitting by the Superdome with what seemed like no hope in sight.

Take into account the many businesses that were up and running before Katrina hit, and how many have disappeared because of it.

Imagine for a moment you are building your business. You sell widgets, you are buying, selling, tracking orders, doing account, and the many other facets of tasks that go into your business`s daily operation. In a moment`s notice, your business is wiped out. Not by bad financial planning, not by some bad accountant you hired or a lost account, but because of a natural disaster.

Is your business prepared to rebuild after a disaster? Is ready to pick up where it left off, as if nothing happened? If you answered no to both those questions then you need to get an emergency plan in place.

Backup your data. Believe it or not, even in today`s high tech world, a lot of businesses do not back up data properly. Some do it once a night and then the backup is in the same location as their main data centers. This makes no sense. If your building is wiped out, all of your data and all of your backup data is in the same place. You need to separate the two. You should do a backup of your system every night. There are many services out there that offer this at a nominal cost. When compared to what the cost will be when you lose all that data, hiring a firm that specializes in data backup and recovery will be well worth it.

Team organization. Even if you are able to rebuild your data center from your backups, if you and your team, meaning your employees, are not on the same page, and have no idea what the next steps are, or what their roles in the recovery are, you and your team will look like a bunch of chickens with their heads cut off. You should have a written plan in place as to what the efforts of each team member will be after a disaster occurs. Keeping everyone involved, and informed as to what they are responsible for, will make a transition to getting your business up and running again, a smooth one. This plan must be updated periodically, especially as employees come and go.

Write it all down. Finally, get the entire plan in writing. This plan, must be a detailed outline of steps and procedures as to exactly how to get the business up and running. It should also outline what each person is responsible for, how to get the data backup and running, who handles acquiring a temporary space to run the business and so on. This document, will be the most important item of your emergency plan, because it is the actual plan. Make sure each employee has a copy, as well as a saved version on your computer system so it gets backed up with all of your other data. Since you now have a separate vendor handling backup and recovery, your plan is safe. You may want to consider using document version control software such as Documentum. This type of software versions your plan with the ability of people making the changes of checking the document in and out, just the way a library works. When someone has it checked out, no one can make changes to it until they check it back in.

Get your emergency plan in place. You never know when a natural disaster is going to hit, and for that reason, you do not want to be unprepared when it does.

Yahoo shares fight to regain ground after open

Yahoo's shares took a hammering early Monday morning. But by the market's close, a badly beaten, but not mortally wounded, Yahoo ended the day down 15 percent at $24.37 a share.

Microsoft closed out the session at $29.08, down 0.55 percent.

Yahoo shares fought back some of their losses in late morning trading, reaching $24.70 a share, down 13.85 percent from Friday's close.

At the start of the session, the Internet search pioneer was down nearly 20 percent, and in premarket trading down 22 percent.

Microsoft's gains have been shrinking through the morning, leaving the software giant up 0.24 percent to $29.48 a share in late morning trading.

Since the opening bell, shares of Microsoft, which remain in positive territory, have been edging slowly south, while Yahoo, which plunged into the red following Redmond's withdrawal over the weekend of its unsolicited buyout bid, has been pushing upward. Whether this convergence is a sign investors believe the parties may lock horns again has yet to be seen.

"We believe that Microsoft's decision to walk away is driven by its desire to expose Yahoo management as apathetic to shareholder interests," Heath Terry, a Credit Suisse analyst, said in a report.

Needham analyst Mark May, meanwhile, anticipates Yahoo will make a move to appease its shareholders by announcing a "transformational partnership or transaction," such as a Google ad outsourcing deal.

"However, it remains unclear if this deal alone will enable Yahoo to hit the aggressive (2009 and 2010 financial) projections it recently set forth, and we believe some large Yahoo shareholders are unhappy with the prospect of outsourcing a meaningful portion of the company's strategic business," May stated in his report.

Microsoft's In-Car Software

Huge Tragedy in Myanmar

With over 22,500 killed and 41,000 missing most of them from a massive storm surge that washed over the Irrawaddy delta, it will be a long time before Myanmar can restore to its previous self. The place that were really devastated is in Yangun.

Aid officials estimate hundreds of thousands are homeless in the swamplands of the delta southwest of the biggest city Yangon, which was also hard hit by last weekend's storm.

Aid groups and governments, including U.S. President George W. Bush, have urged the secretive military to relax their tight grip to allow humanitarian assistance into Myanmar, which has been ruled by the military for 46 years.

In a rare news conference on Tuesday, Information Minister Kyaw Hsan appealed for help, saying "the government needs the cooperation of the people and well-wishers from home and abroad."
